Colorado business entity search: the Secretary of State register, with agents and federal data
Colorado’s Secretary of State publishes the full business entity register as open data, including the registered agent for every entity. This actor searches it by name or entity ID and returns the record with both the principal office and the agent’s address, plus the dissolution date and the latest status event the register keeps. Where a federal source identifies the entity, it adds the EIN and more — from the SEC for exchange-listed companies, from the IRS for nonprofits.
Who it is for
- KYB and onboarding teams — confirming that a Colorado counterparty exists and is in good standing.
- Legal, collections and compliance teams — who need the registered agent, a legally reliable point of contact.
- Local market researchers — counting active entities by city or formation year.
- Teams qualifying listed companies and nonprofits — who want phone, website, headcount and officers where a federal filing provides them.
What you get
One row per entity, in the same column layout as the other foXLabs company datasets:

A nonprofit gets its EIN from the IRS instead: FOOD BANK OF THE ROCKIES, INC. carries EIN 84-0772672, NTEE code K31Z (Food, Agriculture & Nutrition) and $175,976,147 in revenue. A dissolved entity from the same run, Palantir Investments LLC, reads statusRaw Voluntarily Dissolved with dissolvedOn 2015-07-13.
Use cases
- Entity verification. Confirm a Colorado counterparty exists and is in good standing, and see its latest status event — Delinquent, Reinstated, Dissolved and so on — with the date.
- Registered agent contact. The agent address is a legally reliable point of contact for an entity.
- Local market research. Search a keyword and count active entities by city or formation year.
How to run it
Give the actor entity names or numeric Colorado entity IDs. This is the prefilled input:
{
"queries": ["Palantir", "Ibotta", "Crocs"],
"maxResultsPerQuery": 10
}
queries— a numeric query is looked up as an entity ID; anything else runs a contains-match on the entity name.maxResultsPerQuery— caps how many rows one query may produce.
No API key and no login are needed. Every run queries the register live, and results export to CSV, Excel, JSON, XML or HTML.
You pay only for delivered rows. A query that finds nothing still returns a row carrying your query and an error explaining why — and that row is not charged.
Honest limits
- Private companies stay register-only.
taxNumber,industry,phone,website,employees,capitalandofficerscome from federal sources and are filled only where an entity is identified there. A private company — the bulk of the register — has no public source for them, andemailstays empty for every entity. - Federal matches are strict. A listed company needs the exact name, legal suffix included, an active entity and a state of incorporation that agrees with the register. A nonprofit needs exactly one IRS exempt organization with the same name at the same ZIP code. Anything less certain stays empty; established nonprofits match about 40% of the time, new ones rarely.
- Listed-company officers are insider filers. They are the directors and officers who filed SEC insider reports in the newest published quarter; people who did not file that quarter are not listed.
- Nonprofit returns vary by form. Phone, website, headcount and officers come from the newest e-filed Form 990, 990-EZ or 990-PF, through a monthly-rebuilt foXLabs index of the 14,332 Colorado exempt organizations that e-file. Across those returns phone is filled on 84–96% depending on the form, officers on all of them, and website on 74% of Form 990s (54% for 990-EZ, 19% for 990-PF). Only Form 990 has a headcount line, and the small 990-N postcard carries none of this.
- Agents can be people. Registered-agent fields often name a natural person. That is public in Colorado, but it is still personal data under most privacy regimes.
- Old status notes linger in names. A status note can stay in the register’s name after the status changes again, so
dissolvedOnis set only while the entity’s current status is not active; the note itself is always instatusEvent.sourceUrlpoints to the Colorado business database search page rather than a per-entity page.
Where the data comes from
The Colorado Secretary of State publishes the business entity register through the state’s Socrata open-data API with no key. EINs and industry codes come from SEC EDGAR and the IRS Exempt Organizations Business Master File. Sources: Business Entities in Colorado, SEC EDGAR, IRS EO BMF.
Colorado publishes the entity register as open data, and business filings are public records. Registered-agent records name individuals, so handle that part accordingly.

Frequently asked questions
Can I search by Colorado entity ID?
Yes. A numeric query is looked up as an entity ID; anything else runs a contains-match on the entity name.
Does it include the registered agent?
Yes, with the agent’s address. Many entities use a registered-agent company, which registeredAgent names as such; others name a natural person, which is personal data under most privacy regimes.
Why is the EIN empty for most companies?
Colorado’s register does not publish EINs. The actor fills taxNumber only where a federal source identifies the entity: exchange-listed companies through SEC EDGAR and nonprofits through the IRS. Most private companies have no public EIN at all.
Are dissolved entities included?
Yes. statusRaw keeps Colorado’s own wording, such as Voluntarily Dissolved, and dissolvedOn carries the date while the entity’s current status is not active.
Do I need an API key?
No. The Secretary of State publishes the register through Colorado’s Socrata open-data API with no key.
Start with the prefilled input — Palantir, Ibotta and Crocs — and export the entity rows to CSV, Excel or JSON.
