NIH grant data by organization: who wins NIH money, from which institute, for what

NIH RePORTER is the National Institutes of Health’s public record of funded biomedical research. This actor searches it by recipient organization and returns one clean row per project award: what was funded, by which NIH institute or centre, for how much, in which fiscal year, and which principal investigators lead it. No API key, no login and no proxy are needed.

Use cases

How to run it

Put recipient organization names into queries. This is the prefilled input:

{
  "queries": ["Genentech", "Mayo Clinic", "Regeneron Pharmaceuticals"],
  "maxResultsPerQuery": 25
}

The measured run above returned 47 rows in under 5 seconds. The actor is also on the Apify MCP server as foxlabs/nih-reporter-organization-data, and it supports agentic payments: an AI agent can run it and settle the bill over x402 (USDC on Base) or Skyfire, without an Apify account of its own.

You pay per delivered award row — compute and traffic are included, and rows without an award id are not charged. Export to CSV, JSON or Excel, or read the rows over the API.

Honest limits

Where the data comes from

NIH RePORTER exists so the public can see how federal biomedical research money is spent. The rows describe organizations and funded projects; investigator names appear exactly as NIH publishes them in that public record. This is an independent tool, not affiliated with or endorsed by NIH or the US Government.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an NIH API key?

No. RePORTER is public, and the actor needs no key, login or proxy.

Why does one project appear several times?

A continuing project is funded yearly, so each fiscal year is its own award row. The coreProjectNumber field groups them, so total a project by that number.

Can I limit results to recent fiscal years?

Yes. Set fiscalYears to the years you want, for example 2024 and 2025. Leave it empty for all years.

Why does an organization return nothing?

RePORTER matches the recipient’s registered name. Try the formal spelling, such as REGENERON PHARMACEUTICALS, INC., rather than a brand name.

Does it cover NSF or other agencies?

No, NIH only. NSF publishes its own award record, covered by the NSF Award Data actor.

Start with the prefilled input — Genentech, Mayo Clinic and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals — and export the award rows to CSV, Excel or JSON.
