Reddit data after the API lockdown: how to still get it (2026)

Reddit's free signed-out JSON API is gone. Since October 2026 the .json endpoints that researchers, marketers and tools relied on for a decade return 403 — even from a home IP, even with no automation. The official Data API that remains is paid, OAuth-gated and rate-limited. But the public website Reddit serves to every visitor still carries all of it, and that is how you get Reddit data now: no API key, no OAuth app, no login, no cookies.

What actually changed

So the question isn't "which API key do I buy" — it's "how do I read the public pages cleanly and at scale." That's a scraping problem, and a solved one.

How to get Reddit data without the API

Reddit's own front end renders each page's content into a structured data blob inside the page — the same data the site uses to draw the feed. A scraper reads that blob, not fragile HTML, so it gets clean, typed fields and survives cosmetic redesigns. No account, no OAuth client, no key to rotate. Pick the tool by the question you're asking:

You want…ScraperKey fields
A subreddit's feed (hot/new/top/rising)Subreddit Poststitle, author, score, upvote ratio, comments, flair, posts-per-hour velocity
Everything matching a keyword across RedditSearchmatching posts with subreddit, score and recency, sorted by relevance or date
A full comment threadCommentsnested comments with author, score, depth and timestamps
One post's full recordPost Detailsbody/selftext, media, score, ratio, awards, counts
A user's historyUserprofile, karma, and public post + comment history

Handling the block

A 403 at the edge is the thing to get past, and the answer is not an account — it's reading like a visitor. The scrapers route through the right kind of proxy, rotate exits, pace requests and back off on a refusal rather than hammering a blocked exit. Reddit's home IP ban on the JSON path is per-request, not per-identity, so rotating clean exits through the public website restores the flow. No CAPTCHA solving, no login, no cookies — your own account is never involved and never at risk.

Why not just buy the official API?

Pay-per-result scraping flips that: no setup, a run that finds nothing costs nothing, and the output is a clean row you paste straight into a sheet or a model.

Still need Reddit data? Subreddit feeds, search, comment threads, post records and user history — read from the public website, no API key, no OAuth, no login. Pay-as-you-go, exportable to JSON, CSV or Excel.

Frequently asked questions

Did Reddit shut down its API?

Reddit's official Data API still exists but is paid, rate-limited and OAuth-gated. The free, signed-out .json endpoints that scrapers and researchers relied on for years were effectively closed in October 2026 — they now return 403 even from a residential IP. The public website Reddit serves to visitors still carries the data.

How do you get Reddit data now without the API?

By reading the same server-rendered pages a signed-out visitor's browser reads. Reddit renders each subreddit feed, search result, post and user page into the page's own data, and that can be read with no account, no OAuth app and no API key — which is how our Reddit scrapers keep working after the lockdown.

Do you need a Reddit account or OAuth app?

No. The scrapers read Reddit's public, signed-out surface, so there is no account to create, no OAuth client to register, no key to rotate and no quota to buy — and no risk to your own login.

What Reddit data can you still collect?

Subreddit feeds (hot, new, top, rising), keyword search across Reddit, full comment threads with nesting, individual post records, and public user profiles with their post and comment history — each with score, upvote ratio and a velocity figure.

Is scraping public Reddit data allowed?

Reading public posts and comments a signed-out visitor can see is broadly lawful, but Reddit's user agreement is a separate matter and posts carry usernames and personal content. Use the data for a lawful purpose, aggregate rather than profile individuals, and honour deletion.
